Ulcers of the Upper & Lower Limbs
Specialized Diagnosis and Treatment of Arterial and Venous Ulcers using modern techniques
Skin – The Shield of Your Health
The Skin is the protective shield that separates our body from the external environment and is equipped with a variety of defense mechanisms essential for maintaining health. At the same time, the Skin is highly sensitive to disturbances in blood supply circulating through its very small vessels, known as Capillaries.
The Arteries carry blood from the heart, ending in capillary arterioles in the skin, which provide the skin with oxygen and nutrients for proper function. The blood, now low in oxygen and carrying metabolic waste products, returns through vessels called venous capillaries , which transport it back to the heart, gradually forming larger vessels – the veins
Protection
The skin serves as the body's first line of defense.
Blood Supply
Capillaries provide the skin with oxygen and nutrients.
Arterial Ulcers – A Serious Threat
Arterial skin ulcers are those that develop when the skin does not receive adequate oxygen due to a lack of arterial blood (ischemia) caused by artery narrowing. Arterial ulcers usually appear initially at the tips of the fingers or toes as black necrotic spots or confluent plaques and are mostly accompanied by pain.
Due to the sensitivity of the skin, ischemic ulcers may also develop without arterial blockage but from (A) prolonged pressure on a specific area of the skin (pressure sores in chronically bedridden patients) or (B) prolonged exposure to extreme cold, where sustained vasoconstriction caused by low temperatures leads to oxygen deprivation and necrosis of the epidermis (frostbite, chilblains).
Causes of Arterial Ulcers
- Narrowing of arteries and lack of oxygen
- Prolonged pressure (bedsores)
- Exposure to extreme cold (frostbite)

Venous Ulcers
Venous ulcers (stasis ulcers) develop when there is persistent and prolonged venous stasis due to venous insufficiency or as a result of thrombosis and post-thrombotic syndrome. They are usually located on the anterior and medial surface of the lower leg and ankle , while often before their appearance the skin appears red/gray/brown. Many times, stasis ulcers are accompanied by bacterial superinfection, which should not be ignored.
The cornerstone of chronic ulcer management is a holistic approach . At Vascular Therapy, all modern techniques and treatment modalities for chronic ulcers are applied (elastic compression bandaging, advanced wound dressings, VAC negative pressure therapy). When patients are compliant and follow their physician’s instructions, Vascular Therapy achieves impressive healing rates even in the most resistant chronic ulcers.
Impressive Results
With patient cooperation and the application of modern techniques, we achieve excellent healing rates even in the most challenging chronic ulcers.
